Suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) dressed in Jewish robe, shut down the streets of Umuahia, the Abia State on Tuesday, demanding Biafra restoration.
The protest came weeks after thirty-three members of the group were arrested in Nnewi, Anambra state and paraded for purportedly killing a police officer during its procession.
During today’s protest, the suspected IPOB members carried placards with several inscriptions including “the Jewish State of Biafra” amongst others.
Concise News recalls that pro-Biafra activists earlier this year, marked 51 years since the declaration of the Independent Republic of Biafra plunged Nigeria into a civil war, which led to the death of over 2 million people.
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the IPOB, has on several occasions, called on the Nigerian government to conduct a referendum for the possible emergence of Biafra but in response, the Federal Government proscribed the group and its activities.
Despite the proscription, the IPOB keeps carrying out several protests with today’s activity being the latest of its numerous processions.
Kanu, who came out of hiding in October after the military invasion of his community in Abia State, southeast Nigeria, last year, has maintained that his group will not participate in the forthcoming 2019 elections in Nigeria except a referendum is conducted for the Republic of Biafra.
